Big Moccasin

Big Moccasin

Moccasin Gap, also known as Big Moccasin Gap, is a pass in Clinch Mountain, a long ridge within the Appalachian Mountains, at Gate City, Virginia. This gap has a long history as a passageway through the mountain. It was used by the Cherokee and Shawnee, and was the first gap through which the Daniel Boone Wilderness Road passed on its way to the better-known Cumberland Gap and Kentucky

Beginning in the town of Weber City or Nickelsville, this route takes you along Copper Creek and Big Moccasin Creek. Along the way, you’ll find small “Mom & Pop” restaurants, Creation Kingdom Zoo, and a short hike to the Mendota Fire Tower, which will offer excellent bird watching as well as nearly 360-degree views from atop the Clinch Mountain. Don’t forget to plan your evening at the Carter Fold! You can then return to one of several B&B’s or Airbnb’s and wrap up the night by sitting on the front porch and watching the stars emerge in the night sky.

*Riders should be cautious around low water bridges during heavy rains, as they may be impassable
