  1. Where can I purchase permits?

    Permits can be purchased at select retailers near our trail systems. For a current list of retailers click here.  Spearhead Trails offers annual passes only online. There will be an additional charge of $3.00 for online orders.

  2. Do all riders have to have a permit?

    ALL riders and drivers must have a permit or day pass before entering the trail. Any rider or driver without a permit or day pass will be subject to a citation.

  3. How much is a permit?

    Annual permits are $60.  Day Passes are $20.

  4. Do you offer daily permits or weekend permits?

    We do offer day passes. They are good for one day only and cannot be traded in on annual pass. Day passes are $20. We do not offer weekend permits.

  5. Who is included in an annual permit?

    You get one per person, per waiver. You cannot share a permit with another rider.

  6. What information do I need to provide to get a permit?

    You need a valid driver’s license if you plan to drive your ATV through town. If you are under the age of 18, you need an adult to sign for you.

  7. How long is my permit valid for?

    Annual permits are good for a full 12 months (and then some).  The permit will expire on the last day of the month of the month you purchased them in one year later. Purchase on Nov. 1, 2015, permit will expire on Nov. 30, 2016!  Day passes are only good for the day you purchase them. (They cannot be used as credit to purchase an annual permit)

  8. Am I required to put the permit on my helmet or can I carry it with me?

    Yes, you need to adhere the permit to the left side of your helmet. If you have multiple helmets please contact us at: 276-220-9875

  10. Can I get a copy of your Waiver Form before I arrive?

    A list of rules are available online but waiver forms need to be completed at the retailers!

  11. Do I need a trail permit to ride my bike on the trail?

    Yes, all riders will need to purchase a permit no matter what machine they are riding.

  12. What type of vehicles are allowed on the trails?

    ATVs, 4 Wheelers & Dirt bikes.  Sorry no jeeps or off road rail buggies.

  1. How old do you have to be to be allowed on the trail?

    We don’t have an age restrictions but if the child is operating the machine alone, the machine must be appropriate for the child’s age and size according to the manufacturers recommendation.

  2. What are the rules regarding operation of ATVS on roadways, by persons under 16?

    You have to have a valid driver’s license to operate the machine through the towns.

    You should ride in groups for safety.

  4. Is there a limit on a number in a group?

  6. Is there a speed limit?

    No, unless otherwise posted on multi-use trails but we ask that you use your best judgment.

  7. Are Mufflers required?

    Approved spark arrestors are required.

  8. Do I need to wear a helmet when operating on the trails?

    Yes at all times.

  9. Are Trails one-way?


  10. Do you allow Jeeps?

  12. Are dogs allowed?

    Yes, as long as they are controlled at all times.

  13. Can I ride my bicycle on the trail?

    Yes, permit required.

  14. How are the trails rated?

    Green- easy, Blue- intermediate, Black- advanced/ difficult/ technical.

  15. Is there lodging near the trail?

    Yes. Visit for information.


  1. Can I ride my ATV on paved streets and roads?

    Only if they are marked for ATV use.

  2. What are the rules regarding operation of ATVs on roadways?

    The roads must be approved by VDOT and have proper signage.

  3. What are the rules regarding operation of ATVS on roadways, by persons under 16?

    You must have a valid driver’s license to operate on the roadways.

    At any of our retailers and at Town Hall.

  3. Who can issue citations on the trail?

    Our Trail Police.

  4. Is there camping?

    Yes, however not on the trails.
