The Beginning
On March 13, 2008, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation to create the Southwest Regional Recreation Authority.
The SRRA was formed to serve Southwest Virginia's Buchanan, Russell, Dickenson, Wise, Scott and Lee Counties, as well as the City of Norton through outdoor recreation initiatives.
The mission of the SRRA is to create and manage outdoor recreation opportunities including ATV, UTV, hiking, biking and equestrian trails, as well as sports shooting, that boost economic development in Southwest Virginia.
The growth
From 2008 to 2021, the SRRA expanded Southwest Virginia's ATV and non-motorized trails, adding 400+ miles of outdoor opportunity for hikers, bikers and thrill seekers.
In 2018, the SRRA added the Dixon Range in Clintwood, VA, our multi-weapon sports shooting range, to provide a practice facility for the shooting community.
During this time, The SRRA moved from downtown Coeburn to our current Spearhead Trails® Headquarters building on Norton-Coeburn Highway in Coeburn.
The impact
The SRRA works diligently to secure funding from state and federal partners and grants to expand our reach in the region.
These opportunities have created a trail system that not only serves the local outdoor enthusiast community, but drives tourism dollars from all fifty states to our region.
Additionally the SRRA currently employs over 25 individuals in our region, providing career opportunities that otherwise would not exist.
The future
The SRRA is committed to reducing environmental impact while providing a safe, well-maintained trail system for Southwest Virginia. Our goals will always be rooted in fostering economic development, tourism opportunity and careers in our region.
In 2024, we worked with partners from Virginia Tech, Aspire Marketing and the Virginia Center for Economic and Community Engagement to develop a strategic plan to map the future of The SRRA.
