Trail Overview
On May 16, 2015 Coal Canyon multi-use trial system was officially opened with a little over 20 miles of large fields of views that you can only get on a reclamation area and has grown through the years to include 200+ miles of connected riding with Ridgeview Trail covering approximately 8,000 acres that can take riders to Breaks Interstate Park and the ATV friendly towns of Grundy & Haysi. Coal Canyon is perfect for a mixed-use system. Riders are able to see each other from great distances.
Coal Canyon Trail has 127 miles over 5,600 acres with a balanced number of beginner, intermediate, and expert opportunities. Riders will find open canyons that descend into patches of woods and fields where elk and other wildlife live in their natural habitat. The Trail connects to the ATV friendly town of Grundy and has Visitor Center like no other with Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure Center.

Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure is a campground with cabins, RV and tent sites located at the Spearhead Trails-Coal Canyon ATV/OHV/mountain bike trailhead which offers access to 200-plus miles -- approximately 8,000 acres -- of trail riding. ATV rentals and seasonal elk viewing tours are among the activities offered along with a connection to Breaks Interstate Park.
After riding the trails, make sure you explore all the county has to offer in Buchanan County. Grundy is a small SWVA Town surrounded by majestic mountains on the banks of the Levisa River serves as the County Seat of Buchanan County. Grundy is not only home to the Appalachian School of Law that provides higher education opportunities to all seeking a legal education, nationally and internationally but is well-known for having a 2-Story Wal-Mart with an escalator. You will also find find multiple parks that you should take time to discover - Poplar Gap Park, Poplar Creek Mini-Park, Enochs Branch Park, Keen Mountain Park,Verner Blankenship Park & William P. Harris Park.
